LIONS USE LONG BALL AND DEFENSE TO DEFEAT LAS VEGAS 6-4
Dusty Stevens hits his 1st home run of the season.
On a perfect day for baseball--75, sunny and a light wind--Sierra Vista (6-3) used the home run and defense to  record their second straight win.  Dusty Stevens hit a solo home run in the 4th inning to give the Lions a 3-0 lead.  He also had the Wildcats (1-1) under control from the mound as he only gave up 3 singles in the 1st four innings.  In the 5th inning Vegas scored 2 runs, 1 unearned, as they had 2 singles and an error by Jake Hager.  Vegas also ran themselves out of a run on a nice play by Armondo Perez in left field whose throw to Connor Klein at 3rd was late but Connor threw back to Bill Santiwan at second to get the runner going to 2nd base.  The second base running mistake came in the 7th.  Goldsack had relieved Stevens and allowed the Wildcats to load the bases on 2 singles and a fielder choice with no one out. Wilcat Tim Daniels doubled down the left field line scoring 2 runners, but a great relay throw from Stevens to Hager to Scotty Tomassetti got pinch runner Erick Fedde at the plate to keep the score 6-4.  Daniels later stole 3rd base but was stranded on a great play by Santiwan as he dove to his right up the middle and threw from his knees to get Brig Jensen at 1st to end the game.  Klein also had a nice defensive play on a slow roller in the 2nd inning to help Stevens on the mound.  Stevens picked up his 2nd win of the season and Goldsack got his 3rd save.
Nick Kingham provided the 4 run cushion that the Lions had in the 6th inning by hitting his 4th home run of the season with Stevens and Hager on base after they had both singled.  He also leads the team with a .455 batting average and 13 RBI's.  Julian Cutolo had a perfect 4 for 4 day at the plate with 3 singles, one a push bunt, and a double to raise his batting average to .429.  Santiwan had a single in the 7th inning to extend his team high hitting streak to 5 games.
The Lions open Southwest League play on Monday against Bonanza at Lion Field,  They then play at Western on Wednesday and host Desert Oasis on Friday.  All games are  at 3:30.
