| LIONS DEFEAT PALO VERDE 4-3 TO EXTEND WIN STREAK |
| On a day when the bats were silent, Sierra Vista (10-3, 3-0) found a way to extend their win streak to 6 games by defeating Palo Verde (3-6, 2-0) 4 to 3. A steady 15 mph wind blowing out of the west caused pop ups to fall for hits for both teams and it came down to a great play by Amando Perez in right field to seal the deal for the Lions. In the 7th Matt Hutchings, Palo's 1st baseman, dropped a pop up down the left field line that none of 3 Lions could come up with for a double with one out. Brook Nelson then hit a high fly ball to right which looked like a sure double until Armando Perez came from nowhere to grab it. Hutchings thought the ball was going to fall in and had rounded 3rd base. He.tried to get back to 2nd before the throw but was doubled up to end the inning and extend the Lion's win streak. Palo Verde out hit the Lions 7 to 5, but made 4 errors leading to 2 unearned runs. They also walked 3 Lions and hit 3 more. Sierra Vista stranded 11 runners, leaving the bases loaded in both the 1st and 6th innings. Dusty Stevens started off the 2nd inning for the Lions with a double to right center and scored on a sac fly by Jake Hagger to center field. In the 4th innning the Lions scored 2 more runs on only 1 hit as the Panthers made 3 errors. Nick Kingham drove in Marquis Towers from 3rd on a sac fly. Towers had singled, stole 2nd and gone to 3rd on an error by Cody Schuster, the Panther 3rd baseman. Hager, who had gotten on by an error, scored when Zak Porter dropped Julian Cutolo's fly next to the fence near the right field foul line. Cutolo collected the winning RBI in the 7th with a single to right center to drive in Hager who had gotten on by a wind blown double on the left field foul line. Hager started and pitched the first 5 innings, giving way to Blair Goldsack to start the 6th inning. Goldsack got the win, the 1st of the year for him, as he threw 2 scoreless innings. The Durango Tournament begins on Monday. The first game is against Narbonne, CA at 8:00 AM. The Lions play their 2nd game of the day at 10:45 against Sylmar, CA. Tuesday they play Conquitlam B.C. at 8:00 AM. The Wednesday schedule will be determined by the results from the first two days of play but the Lions will play at least 1 game on Wednesday at Lion Field. Boxscore |
