Sierra Vista moves to Championship Game with 8-4 win over Green Valley
5/20/2005
Henderson. NV @ CCSN - 5/20/05   JUSTIN GARCIA (courageous, determined, gutsy, mentally tough, crafty, WINNER) took the mound for Sierra Vista (33-5) on Friday afternoon after singling in two runs in the Lion's half of the first inning.  After getting the first two Green Valley (27-9) batters to fly out,  he  promptly gave up four hits and three runs before getting the 3rd out.  After Sierra Vista's Chad Riddle hit a two run homer to get the Lions back on top 4-3, Garcia again took the mound in the second and gave up one more run on three hits, leaving two on base to end the inning.  Some guys would have questioned being on the mound at all in the 3rd.  However, Garcia dug down inside himself and came up with 4 innings of great high school pitching, retiring 12 of the 14 batters he faced.  The Lion's Sandman, Justin Mettilka, came on in the 7th to finish off Green Valley and send Sierra Vista into the State Championship undefeated.  They'll play Centennial at 12:00 at CCSN after Centennial defeated Green Valley in the late game Friday.
This win was Garcia's biggest, but by no means his first.  In 2001, with no seniors and only 500 juniors and sophomores enrolled in the school, Garcia--a freshman--went up against Durango, then ranked 19th in the nation.  He delivered the first league win for Sierra Vista and has been the ace of the staff since then.  He has 30 wins in the last four years, usually gettting the toughest assignments.
Clutch hitting by the Lions kept the score close early on and gradually opened the lead to 8-4 in the 6th inning.  Five different hitters had doubles--Scott Berke to lead of the 1st inning and eventually score, Garcia to lead off the 3rd also scoring, Chuck Howard to drive in a run in the 3rd, and back to back doubles in the 6th by Kyle Gutchewsky and Pat Grennan scoring the 8th run..  Four different Lions had two hits on the night: Berke, Riddle, Howard and Garcia.  There was a total of 12 hits with Riddle getting 3 RBI's and Garcia 2 RBI's.
